Marian Seldes on Joy

“Joy has to move,” Marian told me, “and joy needs a witness.” Marian went to plays in theatres and churches and basements and schools; she went to readings; she went to musicals and operas and recitals; she read the books everyone was reading and that no other people were reading. Whatever she took in and loved, she shared. “I have loved this,” she would say or write, “and I want you to have it, too.”

This was one of her favorite quotes:

Find out where joy resides, and give it a voice far beyond singing. For to miss the joy is to miss all.–Robert Louis Stevenson
