Marian Seldes: We Are All Related

Marian in Giradoux’s Ondine, in 1954. Photographed by Carl Van Vechten.

Let people think of you as silly. There are always people who will. Nonetheless, I am going to be happy, and I am going to be optimistic. I am going to root for everyone to succeed, even when I can see where they failed. I can see where I have failed, and I want to keep going on. Don’t we all? I am not empowered or made happy by the failures of others, and I am not enlarged by any successes I’ve had: It is simply all in the work of a day. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. The work still matters. We are all connected. We are all related, and I’m going to show up for everyone until I simply can’t.

From a conversation in 1987
